Unchie sets the standard w/ release “See You There”
Unchie has definitely been on a warpath lately. When it comes to showing his lyrical ability, standing firm in his place within Chicago’s creative ecosystem, and simply reminding people that he can rap, Unchie has been extremely intentional. His music carries weight, but his impact goes beyond the records. The people he works with, the community work he’s been connected to, and the energy he continues to bring into different spaces throughout the city all play a part in understanding the type of artist Unchie is becoming. With this new record “See You There”, there’s definitely a lot to appreciate. The sample immediately creates an atmosphere and gives the record a strong foundation. But if we’re being critical, we want more bars. More raps. More Unchie..
Unchie is one of those artists who has a natural ability to tell stories. His voice carries character, and when he gets into a lyrical pocket, you actually want to hear where he’s going with the thought. As much as we love the instrumental and the sample, there are moments where we want the bar play to carry just as much weight a little longer. Let the beat breathe, absolutely, but let Unchie rap too. At the same time, there is something interesting about how Unchie understands length and introduction. He knows how to create a record that feels like an opening statement without completely giving the listener everything. This record is short, but it almost feels intentionally short. Like a door cracking open before something bigger happens..
So now we’re wondering, is a project coming? Because if this record is an introduction to a larger body of work, we’re listening. The foundation is there. The storytelling ability is there. The bars are definitely there. We just want Unchie to lean further into them and remind people exactly why his pen deserves attention. The record may be short, but hopefully, we won’t be waiting long for what’s next..
