Manasseh creates beautiful sonics w/ release “Junie”
Manasseh is one of those vocalists who is quietly helping redefine what Chicago soul and alternative music can sound like. But beyond the music, Manasseh has always carried a certain type of spirit. A golden heart. An extraordinary human being who somehow finds a way to translate pieces of that humanity into his records. His storytelling has always been one of his strongest weapons, and this new record with Galaxy Francis is another prime example of why we continue to pay attention..
Our biggest critique of Manasseh is actually pretty simple. We need more music. Manasseh has this habit of giving you records filled with so many small details, emotions, and nuanced moments that by the time you really settle into the world he’s creating, the record is over. He gives you just enough information to become invested but not enough to completely satisfy the curiosity. And maybe that’s intentional. Maybe that’s part of the magic. But selfishly, we want more. This record with Galaxy Francis carries extremely powerful replay value. The production is stellar, creating enough space for Manasseh’s vocals and storytelling to exist without either feeling forced. There’s a natural chemistry within the sound that makes you wonder what an entire project built within this type of sonic world could sound like..
And that’s really where our minds are. Is there a project coming? Because Manasseh continues to leave breadcrumbs. Records that feel like chapters from a much larger story. Short glimpses into a creative mind that clearly has more to say. Chicago’s alternative and soul ecosystem is continuing to evolve, and Manasseh is definitely one of those voices helping shape where it can go next. We just need him to stop making us wait so long to hear it..
