Simmy turns up the vibes w/ release “Act Like It”

Simmy is one of those individuals who has already been putting in work within Chicago’s creative ecosystem before ever really stepping behind a microphone. As a DJ and curator, her ear for music and ability to create spaces has put her in rooms that matter. More importantly, her taste has consistently helped push what people are listening to, how music is being presented, and the overall energy surrounding culture in the city. That influence has slowly but surely started to echo outside of Chicago as well. So, hearing Simmy actually make the transition into creating music herself is interesting. With “Act Like It” being one of her first records, there’s definitely something here. The record has replay value, and Simmy carries this smooth, almost monotone flow that makes the song extremely easy to digest. She’s calm. She’s comfortable. And if you’re actually listening, she’s definitely saying some things. Nothing about her delivery feels like she’s trying too hard to convince us that she belongs behind the microphone. She just gets in her pocket and stays there..

Our biggest critique is the mixing and mastering. We want to hear more intention behind how the vocals are placed within the record. There are moments where a cleaner mix and stronger master could make certain bars hit harder and give Simmy’s voice even more presence. Especially with a flow this subtle, the smallest details matter. The production and vocals have to work together to make sure the listener catches everything she’s bringing to the table. But let’s also be clear, going from DJing and curating music to actually making records is not an easy transition. Having an ear is one thing. Creating your own sound is completely different. Simmy is showing us that the transition is possible, and for one of her first records, the potential is definitely present..

Now we have questions. Is there a project coming? Is this the beginning of an EP? Is Simmy really about to start putting music out consistently? We hope so. The ear is already there. The taste is already there. The relationships with music and culture are already there. Now it’s about sharpening the sound, trusting the process, and continuing to make records. The production is straight to the point and easy to hear but we want to hear more, again Simmy has great taste in curating events and DJing so we are hoping for more bar play over more different styled production in the future. We definitely hope Simmy has more music on the way..

Take a listen and let us know what you think..
