Ta’Rhonda Jones shakes things up w/ release “Breaking Character”

Ta’Rhonda Jones is not only a legend in Chicago, but also a top tier actress and creative whose work continues to leave a lasting impact through film, visuals, community work and storytelling with direct intentionality. Her artistry has always carried a unique presence. Her music has consistently existed in a lane of it’s own. Whether through moments where audiences were introduced to her work on “Empire” or through her independent creative expression, there has always been something transformative about the way she approaches sound and emotion. This project feels like a continuation of that legacy..

What stands out most on “Breaking Character” is the experience of the project as a whole. The replay value is strong, the mixing feels intentional, and the overall quality of the body of work remains consistent throughout. There’s structure in the way the music unfolds, and each moment feels placed with care rather than simply assembled. There aren’t many negatives to point out here. If anything, our biggest takeaway is simply wanting more. This project reminds listeners why Ta’Rhonda Jones continues to be such an important creative voice and why her artistry deserves continued exploration. “Breaking Character” feels like a project centered around identity, presentation, and the moments where those two things no longer align. What immediately stands out is the intention behind the album. There’s a feeling throughout the project that every choice is meant to support a larger experience instead of chasing isolated moments. The sequencing feels connected, and the project carries itself with a sense of purpose from beginning to end..

One of the strongest elements here is the replay value. There’s enough detail within the performances and enough consistency in the atmosphere that returning to the project feels rewarding rather than repetitive. The quality control is present, and the overall listening experience feels structured and complete. What also works well is the balance between expression and restraint. The project doesn’t feel like it’s trying to do too much at once. Instead, it trusts it’s identity and lets the music communicate what it needs to without overextending itself..

If there’s one thing we’d like to see explored further moving forward, it would be even more moments. These records completely shift the energy or push into unexpected territories sonically to create larger peaks across the listening experience. Jones has a energy already that resembles OG emcees before her that represent what Chicago is structured from. She definitely sounds like she is just getting started and we hope that this means more releases from her because her artistry is definitely needed. With features from Teefa, Joel Q, GLC, VAADI, Nathan Palmer, Mg Marz, & Philmore Greene we can’t wait for what Jones got next. Overall, “Breaking Character” feels like a project that understands itself. It’s intentional, detailed, and creates an experience that feels bigger than individual records alone..
