QUEEN SY has fun w/ release “my jesus year”
QUEEN SY may be new to our platform, but she is far from new to the community. For years, she has built a name through her work in beauty and hair, but creativity has never stopped at beauty for QUEEN SY. Her musical foundation reaches into the Black church, spirituality, and the Chicago communities that helped shape her. This new project “MY JESUS YEAR” feels like QUEEN SY beginning to step forward and introduce another dimension of who she is. What immediately stands out is the project’s unapologetic emphasis on Christianity, spirituality, faith, and belief. QUEEN SY isn’t attempting to soften those convictions to make the music more accessible. Instead, she embraces them. There’s a playful energy throughout the music, but underneath that playfulness is determination. You can hear someone who believes deeply in what she’s saying and understands exactly what she wants her message to represent..
Our biggest critique is that now we want the testimony behind the message. The faith is present. The spirituality is present. The conviction is present. But QUEEN SY has clearly lived enough life to have a much larger story behind those beliefs. On the next body of work, we’d love to hear her dig deeper into the personal experiences that shaped her faith, the victories, disappointments, sacrifices, relationships, community, beauty industry, church experiences, Chicago upbringing, and moments that challenged what she believed. Don’t move away from the subject matter, go further into it. Because the more personal QUEEN SY becomes, the more powerful the spiritual message can become. Faith hits differently when listeners understand what someone had to survive, overcome, sacrifice, or learn in order to believe the way they do..
This project feels like an introduction, and it’s a strong step forward. Now that QUEEN SY has introduced us to what she believes, we want to hear the story of the woman behind the belief..
Until then, take a listen and let us know what you think.
