Recoechi keeps projecting his message to the world w/ release “Act 2: Body of God”
Recoechi has been doing one of the most abstract things an artist can do in Chicago’s music ecosystem right now, sticking to his guns. Even before “FLAVAZ”, Recoechi has been intentional about every move. From building relationships with people like John Monopoly to working within the orbit of Closed Sessions and DJ RTC, there has always been a sense that Recoechi isn’t simply trying to release music, he’s trying to understand exactly what kind of artist he wants to become and who belongs in that world with him. This new project feels like one of the clearest answers we’ve gotten yet. Sonically, this body of work is magnificent. The mixing and mastering, skits, additional sound bites, transitions, production choices and small details throughout the project all feel deliberate. Nothing feels like it was thrown in just to fill space. Instead, those pieces work together to create an actual world around Recoechi, a world that carries the spirit of a hero understanding his place in the world and is determined to share that perspective with the world. And that hero quality might be the most interesting part..
Recoechi isn’t afraid to talk about the contradictions that come with trying to simply be a human being while simultaneously chasing something as demanding as music. This project “Act 2: Body of God” He gives us the wins, frustrations, doubts, confidence, mistakes and realities of navigating this industry as an independent artist. There’s no attempt to make the journey look cleaner than it actually is. He spills his truths throughout the project, and that honesty gives the music weight beyond the production. The features are equally strong, with contributions from Vic Mensa, Mike DFG, Saba, kyngstxnn, Hanumankind, J.Ivy, MOYANA, AMBI, Malik Jewel, RHOME, Naira Bills, & Young(In) delivering our favorite guest verse on the project. But even beyond individual performances, what stands out is how much conceptual depth lives inside each record. Songs don’t just feel like songs, they feel like different scenes from the same universe. That makes this one of those projects you can run back repeatedly and continue catching something different. Our only critique is simple, we want Recoechi to go even deeper..
Since “FLAVAZ”, we’ve gotten the introduction. We’ve heard what Recoechi can do sonically. Now, with this project, we’re beginning to understand the person and the story behind those sounds. That needs to continue. We want more of Recoechi’s story, not only throughout the music, but through whatever else he chooses to create around it. Visuals. Film. Interviews. Performances. World building. Whatever form it takes, there is clearly a larger narrative here worth documenting. Because Recoechi isn’t just developing into a stronger artist. He’s becoming one of the more compelling voices rising out of Chicago’s music ecosystem right now, precisely because he continues to bet on his own perspective..
