Imani Imani creates awesome sonics w/ release “Papercut”
We’ve always been fans of the creative agency pg Lang, not only because of the artistry associated with names like Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem and the worlds they’ve helped build, but because the creative identity behind the platform has consistently pushed ideas that feel ahead of the curve and ahead of their time. The artists they choose to build with always seem intentional, layered, and interesting. Imani Imani feels like another strong example of that philosophy..
While we’re still learning more about this artist and discovering the full scope of their creative identity, what already stands out is their understanding of atmosphere and sonic curation. This project feels like a thoughtful introduction into what Imani Imani is capable of creating. There are moments across the album that carry a sense of ambition and emotional detail that listeners may associate with artists and collectives that prioritize world building and intentional storytelling. You can hear traces of expansive creative thinking and immersive sonic direction, but the project never feels derivative. Instead, it feels like an artist taking inspiration and translating it into something personal..
The mixing and mastering feel polished, the song structures are purposeful, and the project carries strong repeat value from front to back. Conceptually, the album explores emotional spaces that make up the human experience, celebration, longing, intimacy, envy, connection, reflection, and the complicated emotions that can exist all at once. For a shorter project, it manages to touch a surprising amount of emotional ground while remaining cohesive. If there’s one thing we’d ask for, it’s simply more. The world that’s introduced here feels rich enough to spend additional time in, and the brevity of the project leaves us wanting another chapter. This is a very well put together introduction via a album and one that leaves us excited to hear where Imani Imani decides to go next..
