Nahla Gem gives powerful perspective w/ release “A Moment Mr. Jackson”

If you’re familiar with the amazing work that comes from the platform Lyrical Lotus you know it’s creator Nahla Gem has been working very hard to make sure a certain goal is met, which is to bring community together more. Even since last year collaborating with legendary Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. and so many others Nahla Gem has been doing the work that most are to afraid to even cross. With that being said her organizing is only one of the few things that she’s amazing at, one of the other great things is her artistry. There’s a certain kind of spoken word that doesn’t perform for applause, it performs for truth. On “A Moment Mr Jackson”, Nahla Gem delivers a piece that feels less like a staged recital and more like a private reckoning made public. From the opening breath, her voice carries intention. Not just in the words themselves, but in the weight she assigns to each one. She doesn’t rush. She allows space, space for thought, space for tension, space for the listener to catch up emotionally. It creates an atmosphere where you’re not just hearing her, you’re sitting with her. What makes “A Moment Mr Jackson” land is it’s emotional precision. Nahla Gem moves between vulnerability and conviction with control. There are moments where her tone feels almost hushed, like she’s speaking directly to a memory or a person who may or may not still be present. Then, without warning, that softness sharpens, her voice grows firmer, more declarative, as if she’s reclaiming something that was once uncertain..

The writing leans into reflection without becoming abstract. There’s intention behind every phrase, every pause, every shift in cadence. Themes of identity, accountability, and emotional truth thread through the piece, but she never over explains them. Instead, she trusts the listener to meet her halfway, to interpret, to feel, to question. And then there’s the rhythm. Even without heavy instrumentation, Nahla Gem creates a sonic experience through her delivery alone. Her cadence becomes the beat. The pauses hit like percussion. The repetition feels ritualistic, like she’s circling an idea until it fully reveals itself..

By the time “A Moment Mr Jackson” closes, there’s no neat resolution. No final statement that ties everything together. Instead, she leaves you with something more powerful, a lingering feeling, an unresolved thought, a quiet echo of everything she just unpacked. Nahla Gem doesn’t just recite poetry here. She holds space with it. And “A Moment Mr Jackson” proves that sometimes the most impactful moments in spoken word aren’t the loudest, they’re the ones that stay with you long after the voice fades..
