femdot. gives superb barplay w/ release “Champion Sound”

At this point, femdot. doesn’t need much of an introduction. But if you are somehow experiencing his music for the first time, you’re in for something special. femdot. has developed into one of Chicago’s most intentional storytellers, not simply because of his ability as an emcee, but because of how he translates his experiences, observations and perspective into music that can travel beyond the city. His pen has always carried detail, personality and purpose, and his collaboration with producer GoldHaze on “Champion Sound” is another example of exactly why his voice continues to matter..

The record has incredible replay value. GoldHaze gives femdot. a sonic landscape that allows him to move comfortably while still challenging his delivery, and femdot. responds with the type of insightful bar play and storytelling we’ve come to expect from him. There are lines you’ll catch immediately and others that will make you run the record back just to make sure you heard them correctly. That relationship between production and lyricism is what makes “Champion Sound” work so well. But the record also feels like it could be signaling something bigger. femdot. has been moving with intention outside of the music as well, curating events and creating spaces that bring people together while continuing to build his own artistic world. That makes these recent musical moves even more interesting. It feels like we could be watching the beginning of another chapter..

Our only critique is really a request, we’re ready for the next project. femdot. has already proven what he can do as an emcee. He has proven what he can do as a storyteller. And records like “Champion Sound” continue showing an artist whose perspective is expanding beyond Chicago without ever losing the foundation that made his work special in the first place. Hopefully, there’s a larger body of work coming soon..
