Unregistered User gives amazing sonics w/ release “The Epoch”
Unregistered User is one of those creatives where you can tell the rabbit hole of inspiration goes extremely deep. There doesn’t seem to be any hesitation about where they’re willing to pull from, either. Heavy nostalgia, golden era hip hop, video games, obscure samples, sound bites, different eras of culture it all becomes material. But what makes Unregistered User interesting is that these references don’t necessarily feel like attempts to recreate the past. They feel like pieces being collected to construct an entirely different universe. “The Epoch” might be one of the clearest examples of that universe coming together..
The project features an impressive collection of collaborators, including Vic Spencer and Dskillz Harris, but even with the strength of those appearances, what really caught our attention was how different each record feels from the one before it. There isn’t one sound controlling the entire album. The sonics move. The textures change. Again features from Duck Girl, Vermin the Villain, B4Lasers, BSerpa, Cleva Thoughts, Lokye, BillyTheKid, Kenny Morningstar, & Blaq Rush arrive and add something different. Samples, interludes, game sound bites, and other pieces of audio are placed throughout the project with enough intention that listening to “The Epoch” can sometimes feel like moving through different rooms inside the same world. And we love that. The replay value is extremely high. This is definitely smoker music. This is definitely music for sitting with the details. There are sounds and references buried throughout the project that make you want to run certain records back just to figure out what you heard the first time. More importantly, it feels like Unregistered User is becoming increasingly comfortable with what their own creative language sounds like..
We don’t necessarily have a critique for “The Epoch.” We have a suggestion, document this. Projects like this don’t just appear. There’s a story behind choosing these samples. There’s a story behind these references. There’s a story behind deciding which sound bite belongs where. There’s definitely a story behind building relationships strong enough to bring artists like Vic Spencer, & Dskillz Harris to the table. Too often, independent artists document the finished product without documenting the archaeology that created it. And with an artist like Unregistered User, the archaeology might be just as interesting as the artifact. We want studio footage. Conversations about influences. Stories behind the samples. The records that inspired the records. The games that inspired the sound bites. The process of reaching out to collaborators and figuring out why each voice belonged in a particular place. Because “The Epoch” feels like more than another project in a catalog. It feels like another piece of evidence that Unregistered User is slowly building a world entirely their own. And we’re interested in seeing just how deep that wormhole goes..
