Young Nichi locks in w/ release “Sorry, You’re Welcome: Side A EP”
Given the title, “Sorry, You’re Welcome,” there’s a sly double-edgedness at play, a kind of bittersweet offering, a gift with an apology attached. It promises intimacy, regret, swagger, & vulnerability all packed into a short runtime. Young Nichi has been around for a while, but he’s been locked in with his swim team family all year shaking things up. This new release is proof of that..
The production on this EP is sharp, minimal, but with just enough texture to keep it alive. There’s a lean in the quality while the beats are clean, drums are crisp, & the synths or ambient pads appear but rarely dominate. It feels like walking a tightrope between spaciousness and directness, you hear room, but you also feel the lyricist standing right in front of you speaking (or rapping) to you..
There’s restraint in the layering. Young Nichi trusts silence. In that space, his voice becomes more potent. Occasional breathy moments and soft ad-libs anchor the emotional texture. “Sorry, You’re Welcome: Side A” is an intimate, lean, emotionally taut EP. It nods to the listener, offering both confession and guarded pride. There’s maturity in the restraint, the record suggests Young Nichi is less interested in proving himself and more invested in showing himself. It’s a snapshot of someone doubling down on what they mean softly, but earnestly with internal contradictions, the urge to apologize, the need for respect, & the vulnerability underneath the bravado..
If this EP is “Side A,” one hopes Side B will carry forward the tension, perhaps offering resolution—or deeper questions. As it stands, Side A feels like the opening chapter of a longer story, but it’s compelling enough to stand alone..
